Finding ants in the car is nightmare for me and i am sure you also. Recently, my wife faced this exact problem with her Camry, and I’m here to provide complete guide on how to get ants out of your car.
How to Get Ants Out of Your Car?

It all began when our daycare provider left a child’s car seat outside. Unfortunately, that seat became infested with ants and was later placed back into the car. From there, the infestation spread rapidly. We found ants crawling along the back seats, the dashboard, and even under the driver’s side controls. They were everywhere.
Step 1: Identify the Infestation Zones
First thing that we did and you should do is identify exactly where the ants are congregating. We found them at:
- Around the child’s car seat
- Inside storage compartments
- Along door panels and dashboard spaces
- Under the floor mats and carpets
I am pretty sure that these are the common places where ants make clusters. But still you should look everywhere in your car to find out all the hidden places.
Step 2: Fumigate with a Smoke Fogger
Once we identified where ants are then use a Raid Fumigator (smoke fogger). Here’s what we did:
- Placed a water-filled container (up to the indicated line) in the car.
- Activated the fogger and placed it inside the vehicle.
- Closed the car doors tightly and let the fumigator work its magic.
You have to wait for at least 30-40 till entire car gets fumigated. Before fumigating make sure you remove all open food and remove sensitive electronics to avoid negative effect of fumes on them.
Step 3: Ventilate and Inspect
After 30-40 minutes we ventilated the car by opening all the doors and windows to get rid of all the vapors. But there were still few ants crawling inside the car. I noticed many of them were dead, some were motionless while some was still unaffected. so it was a time for next step to remove them.
Step 4: Spray with Insect Killer
To double down, we used Ortho Home Defense spray, applying it:
- Under the carpets
- On all seat rails and footwells
- Inside storage areas
- Around door edges and dashboard corners
We even sprayed underneath the seats and behind the trim panels—anywhere ants could be hiding or nesting.
The idea here is simple: even if some ants survived the fogging, they wouldn’t survive this second layer of defense.
Step 5: Clean and Shake Everything Down
After the sprays dried and the fumes cleared:
- We removed all loose items from the car
- Washed and vacuumed every surface
- Shook out car seats, floor mats, and other fabric items
- Cleaned hard surface with damp cloth
Remember you have to finish the ant trail otherwise they are going to come back again and again. by hard cleaning all the areas with damp cloth you can make sure that ants won’t come back.
Lessons Learned: What Really Works
We recommend you to always start with a fumigator which reaches almost every space of car and eliminates most of the ants. then always, keep your car clean and remove all potential attractants. If needed spray Ortho Home Defense spray on timely basic before ants congregating in your car.
