What’s Next for Tesla Cybertruck? Parking Assistance Now, FSD Later

  • Tesla Cybertruck owners are still waiting for the Full Self-Driving (FSD) feature, despite paying for it in the Foundation Series package.
  • Tesla’s Autopilot software chief, Ashok Elluswamy, announced that parking assistance will be the next feature rolled out, expected as early as this weekend.
  • Full Self-Driving for the Cybertruck is not expected before next month, with no specific timeline provided for its broader release.
  • The absence of FSD and basic driver assistance features has raised safety concerns, highlighted by a recent fatal accident involving a Cybertruck.

Eight months after Tesla’s highly anticipated Cybertruck hit the roads, early adopters are still waiting for the promised Full Self-Driving (FSD) capabilities. Despite initial assurances from Elon Musk, the futuristic pickup remains devoid of FSD functionality, leaving many Cybertruck owners frustrated, especially those who paid extra for the Foundation Series package that included the yet-to-be-released software.

The latest update from Tesla’s Autopilot software chief, Ashok Elluswamy, provides a glimmer of hope, though it might not be the one owners were expecting.

In a recent message on X (formerly Twitter), Elluswamy revealed that Tesla is prioritizing parking assistance for the Cybertruck. While this feature is undeniably needed—given the Cybertruck’s size and the challenges it poses in tight spaces—it falls short of the more advanced capabilities many owners are eagerly awaiting.

The Cybertruck’s journey has been far from smooth. Tesla delivered the first 10 vehicles during its Delivery Day event in November 2023, with commercial sales kicking off the following month.

However, excitement quickly turned to disappointment as owners discovered the absence of not just FSD, but any form of driver assistance, including basic features like parking assistance and Autopilot.

The situation reached a tragic tipping point earlier this month when a Cybertruck owner lost control of the vehicle, resulting in a fatal crash and subsequent battery fire that engulfed the truck.

While it’s impossible to say whether FSD or even a lane-keeping assist system could have prevented the accident, the incident has underscored the urgent need for Tesla to deliver on its promises.

Elluswamy’s announcement suggests that parking assistance could be rolled out as soon as this weekend, a welcome development for those struggling to maneuver the Cybertruck in everyday scenarios.

However, those eager to test out FSD on their Cybertrucks will have to wait longer. Elluswamy hinted that the full self-driving feature might not be ready until sometime next month, and even then, it will likely be limited to test fleets before a wider release.
