2024 Lexus GX550: A Full Breakdown of Pros and Cons

2024 Lexus GX550: A Full Breakdown of Pros and Cons

This week, Lexus was kind enough to send me the 2024 GX550 Premium Plus to test and review. I had been looking forward to this opportunity for quite some time, especially since a couple of months ago, I had the chance to experience the Toyota Land Cruiser. These vehicles share a similar platform but have key differences, and I must say, the GX did not disappoint. Overall, it was a very positive experience.

This particular GX550 was a pre-production build from late 2023, making it over a year old. Despite being pre-production and not a consumer-available VIN, the build quality was excellent, leaving me thoroughly impressed. Over the past week, I’ve noted several things I loved about the vehicle—and a few areas where it could improve. So, let’s dive in!

1. Powerful Twin-Turbo V6 Engine

The standout feature of the GX550 is its 3.4L twin-turbo V6 engine, paired with a 10-speed torque-converter automatic transmission. This setup delivers an impressive 349 horsepower and 479 lb-ft of torque. While similar to the engine in the Toyota Tundra, the GX has slight modifications, such as a lower compression ratio.

The powertrain is exceptionally smooth, powerful, and provides a satisfying driving experience. Compared to the Land Cruiser’s turbocharged four-cylinder hybrid, I found the GX’s V6 more engaging. The engine’s traditional six-cylinder feel and smoothness outshine the hybrid alternative, though fuel economy is a downside, which I’ll discuss later.

2. Exceptional Comfort

Comfort is another highlight of the GX550. Every seat in the vehicle offers excellent support, making it ideal for long road trips or daily commutes.

The suspension leans towards a softer tuning, providing a plush ride that absorbs road imperfections. While this results in some body lean and nose dive during braking, it enhances overall comfort.

The GX’s off-road capabilities also shine, thanks to its high/low range transfer case and four-wheel-drive system with a center differential lock.

While the Overtrail trims offer even more off-road features, such as a rear locking differential, the Premium Plus trim still excels in providing a well-rounded and comfortable experience.

3. Stylish Design

The GX features a handsome, modern design that I find slightly more appealing than the Land Cruiser’s. Highlights include the uniform LED light strip at the rear, triple-beam LED headlights, and thoughtful design elements like the rising beltline near the rear quarter window. The body-colored cladding adds a premium touch to the exterior, making the GX visually striking on the road.

4. Advanced Lighting Features

The lighting system is another strong point. The GX features triple-beam LED headlights, LED fog lights, and cornering lights that illuminate as you steer.

The rear lighting includes LED turn signals, reverse lights, and a signature light strip. The interior lighting, though not color-configurable, adds a premium feel with footwell LEDs and accent lighting.

5. Practical Cargo Space

The GX’s cargo area seems to have a slightly lower load floor than the Land Cruiser, making it easier to load items. This difference might be due to the absence of a hybrid battery in the GX.

Additionally, the GX includes power-folding third-row seats, a feature absent in the Land Cruiser. While the third row isn’t the most spacious, it’s a practical addition for occasional use.

Dislikes of 2024 Lexus GX550

1. Small Side Mirrors

Both the GX and Land Cruiser have tall but narrow side mirrors, limiting visibility. While this design might benefit narrow trails, I found it less practical for everyday driving.

2. Tight Third-Row Seating

Tight Third-Row Seating

The third-row seats in the GX are cramped, with limited legroom and a low seating position. While they are easy to access thanks to fold-forward second-row seats, they aren’t ideal for regular use.

3. Lack of Cargo Cover Storage

The retractable cargo cover has no dedicated storage space inside the vehicle. This oversight makes it inconvenient to manage when switching between using the third row and maximizing cargo space.

4. Limited Adjustability

The power tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel and driver’s seat could use more adjustment range. I found the seat’s front cushion and steering wheel could benefit from slightly more tilt and extension for optimal comfort.

5. Suboptimal Wireless Charging Location

The wireless charging pad in the center console is awkwardly placed, making it difficult to access and remove your phone. A more user-friendly design would improve this feature.

6. Poor Fuel Economy

Poor Fuel Economy

The GX struggles with fuel efficiency, especially in city driving, where I observed as low as 10–12 MPG. Even on highways, the GX barely hit 20 MPG. This, combined with the requirement for premium fuel, makes the GX costly to operate compared to the Land Cruiser.

Conclusion

Overall, the Lexus GX550 Premium Plus was an impressive vehicle that exceeded my expectations. It ranks among the top vehicles I’ve reviewed this year, thanks to its powerful engine, luxurious comfort, and standout design. While it has drawbacks like fuel economy and tight third-row seating, its strengths make it a compelling choice, especially for those seeking a premium alternative to the Land Cruiser.

Let me know in the comments: Would you choose the GX or the Land Cruiser, and why? I’d love to hear your thoughts. Thanks for reading, and I look forward to bringing more content in 2025. Happy New Year!
