2025/2026 Lexus ES Unveiled: Hybrid, EV, and a New Direction

We’re getting close to the 2026 Lexus ES redesign, and one of the popular automotive scoop magazines from Japan has shared some insights on it. In this article, we’ll break down the latest updates and discuss what we can expect from the next-generation2026 Lexus ES.

The Legacy of the Lexus ES

The ES has been a key part of the Lexus brand since its inception. Originally serving as an entry-level model, the ES has evolved over the years.

While smaller vehicles like the UX or the now-discontinued CT have taken over the role of gateway models, the ES has remained a front-wheel-drive, smooth, and luxurious sedan that embodies traditional Lexus values.

The ES: A More Upscale Camry?

Many enthusiasts consider the 2026 Lexus ES as a fancier, more premium version of the Toyota Camry. It shares a similar wheelbase—possibly slightly longer—but has traditionally been viewed as an upscale alternative to the now-discontinued Avalon. Despite this, Lexus has continued to refine the ES, ensuring it retains its identity as a luxury sedan.

Production and Manufacturing Changes

According to recent reports, production of the ES in Kentucky is set to end in August.

This move follows the discontinuation of the Avalon, with ES production shifting back to Japan. While Lexus has confirmed the transition, the exact timing remains uncertain.

A Refresh for China: What It Means

Interestingly, the ES recently received a refresh for the Chinese market, featuring a redesigned spindle grille, updated front and rear lighting with a new light bar, and interior changes like a larger screen.

However, Lexus has stated that this refreshed model will not be available outside of China. This decision raises questions, especially since the ES is due for a full redesign less than a year later.

Expected Powertrain Updates

The next-generation ES is expected to be based on an improved version of the K platform, similar to the upcoming Camry and RAV4 updates. Here’s what we know about potential powertrain options:

  • Hybrid Variants: A next-gen hybrid ES is expected, following Toyota’s recent shift away from V6 engines.
  • Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV): A rumored ES 450h+ plug-in hybrid may debut in 2026, though no official trademark has been filed yet.
  • Battery Electric (BEV): Lexus has trademarks for an ES 350e and ES 500e, indicating that an all-electric version could be part of the lineup. The ES 500e is expected to be a dual-motor, all-wheel-drive model, while the ES 350e’s drivetrain setup remains unclear.

The Loss of Physical Controls: A Concern for Luxury Buyers

One controversial change in the refreshed Chinese ES is the removal of physical climate controls, replaced by touchscreen-based controls. Many enthusiasts, including myself, feel that luxury should involve tactile buttons and dials rather than touchscreens.

While the refreshed ES includes ambient lighting and a larger display, the lack of physical controls could be seen as a downgrade in usability and premium feel.

Market Positioning and Competitors

The ES remains one of Lexus’ best-selling sedans, outselling both the IS and LS combined. While it doesn’t have a direct German competitor, the Audi A6 comes closest in terms of positioning. However, the A6 leans more towards performance, whereas the ES focuses on comfort and traditional luxury.

What’s Next for Lexus and Toyota?

The second half of 2025 is shaping up to be an exciting period for Toyota and Lexus enthusiasts. Here are some key upcoming reveals:

  • Lexus ES Redesign: Expected to be officially announced in the summer of 2025.
  • Toyota Highlander Updates: Likely to include hybrid or plug-in hybrid options, with production shifting to Kentucky.
  • Toyota RAV4 Redesign: A major update is expected for the best-selling Toyota model.
  • Lexus LFR: A potential flagship sports car and GT3 race car.
  • Toyota Celica Revival: Speculated to be revealed by the end of the year.
